Teams used to come inside every Microsoft 365 plan. Microsoft has separated it out, and that quietly changed the buying decision for new customers.
What actually changed
Microsoft unbundled Teams from many Microsoft 365 and Office 365 plans, first in Europe and then worldwide. The reason was regulatory, but the practical effect is simple: newer versions of plans like E3 and E5 are sold "without Teams," and you add Teams back as a separate line item if you want it.
Existing customers on older bundled SKUs generally keep Teams included until they change plans. So whether you need to buy a Teams license depends on when and how you bought, not just on which plan name you see.

How to tell what you already have
Look at your subscription name in the admin center. If it says "with Teams" or predates the unbundling, Teams is included. If it says "without Teams," or you signed up recently, you probably need the Teams Enterprise add-on to get the full experience. When in doubt, your Microsoft partner can read the exact SKU on your tenant.
Do you need the paid version at all?
The free version covers chat, meetings, and file sharing for small groups, but it lacks the admin controls, larger meetings, and integration that businesses rely on. If Teams is where your company works, budget for a paid Teams license, either bundled in your plan or added on. If Teams is only an occasional call tool, free may be enough.
