Microsoft 365 F1 vs F3

The frontline plans, built for deskless shift workers, not office staff. F1 is the bare-essentials tier. F3 adds a mailbox and the web and mobile apps. The difference is whether the worker needs email.

Short answer: F1 is for pure communication and scheduling, no real mailbox. F3 adds a 2 GB Exchange mailbox and web and mobile Office apps. If the worker needs their own email inbox, go F3. If they just need Teams and shift tools, F1.

The real difference

Both plans are for the same audience: deskless and shift workers in retail, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, and field roles. Neither includes the full installed desktop Office apps, and both are priced well below Business and Enterprise plans.

The dividing line is email and apps. F1 gives Teams, SharePoint, and an identity, with an Exchange Kiosk service that covers the Teams calendar but not a real mailbox. F3 adds a 2 GB Exchange mailbox and the web and mobile Office apps, so the worker can send email and lightly edit documents.

When to pick F1

Workers who need communication, schedules, and shift tools through Teams, but not their own email inbox. The lowest-cost way to give deskless staff a secure identity and a place to collaborate.

When to pick F3

Frontline workers who need a real email address and the ability to view and edit documents on the web or a phone. Still far cheaper than a Business or Enterprise seat, and the right fit for most frontline roles that touch email.

When to leave frontline entirely

If a frontline worker becomes a full information worker who needs the installed desktop apps and a large mailbox, move them to Business Premium or Enterprise E3. Frontline plans are scoped for deskless work, not office work.

Common questions

Does F1 include a mailbox?

Not a full one. F1 uses an Exchange Kiosk service for the Teams calendar, without a standard mailbox. F3 adds a 2 GB mailbox.

Do frontline plans include desktop Office?

No. Neither F1 nor F3 includes the installed desktop apps. F3 includes the web and mobile versions.

Can I mix frontline and Business or Enterprise plans?

Yes. It is common to license office staff on Business or Enterprise plans and deskless staff on F1 or F3 in the same tenant.
